Hinode Studio

Hinode (日の出) is the Japanese word for sunrise.

The name reflects two ideas that lie at the heart of my work. The first is my longstanding engagement with Japan—a country often known as the Land of the Rising Sun—which has shaped much of my research and writing over the past years. The second is the belief that careful observation, patient inquiry and thoughtful writing can illuminate the familiar in new ways. Like the first light of dawn, understanding rarely arrives all at once, but gradually reveals what was already there.

Hinode Studio is the independent practice through which I bring together my work as a writer, researcher and educator. From the studio I collaborate with magazines, universities, cultural institutions and other organisations on projects that explore the cultural, philosophical and social questions shaping contemporary life.

Whether writing an essay, conducting research or teaching a course, my aim is the same: to approach complex subjects with intellectual rigour while remaining accessible to a broad audience.

If you are interested in collaborating on a writing, research or educational project, I would be delighted to hear from you.

About my work

Writing & Journalism

I write essays, long-form journalism, reportage and interviews for magazines, newspapers and cultural publications. My work combines rigorous research with a narrative style, making complex ideas accessible without sacrificing nuance.

I am available for commissioned essays, feature articles, interviews, editorial work and other writing projects.

Research

My research focuses on culture, philosophy and society, with particular expertise in Japan, loneliness, social withdrawal, modernity and the human relationship to the world.

I undertake qualitative research, literature reviews, commissioned reports and collaborative academic projects, and I welcome interdisciplinary collaborations with universities, research institutes and cultural organisations.

Teaching, Lectures & Workshops

I give lectures, workshops and guest courses for universities, cultural institutions and other organisations. My teaching draws on both academic research and fieldwork, creating conversations that connect scholarship with broader public questions.

Editorial & Writing Support

I work with researchers, students and authors in developing clear, compelling and well-structured texts. This includes editorial feedback, academic writing support and guidance throughout the writing process.
