Support my work

I am an independent researcher and writer working on themes of social isolation, hikikomori, modernity, and meaning in contemporary society, with a particular focus on Japan. My work combines ethnographic fieldwork, philosophical reflection, and long-form essay writing.

At a time when more and more people experience loneliness, disconnection, and a loss of shared meaning, I believe careful, in-depth research matters. Rather than treating these problems as merely personal or psychological, I try to understand them in relation to broader cultural, social, and economic transformations.

Support makes it possible for me to continue this work independently.

Why support my work?

Support independent, in-depth research

Much of my work develops outside institutional structures. This allows for intellectual freedom and depth, but also means it depends in part on the support of readers.

Bring research to a wider audience

Your support helps translate academic and ethnographic research into essays and publications that speak to a broader public beyond the university.

Sustain long-term writing

This work requires time: to read, think, and write carefully. Support helps create the conditions for essays, articles, and books that are developed over the long term.

Enable fieldwork and access

Contributions make it possible to conduct fieldwork, maintain research contacts, and gain access to environments and perspectives that are otherwise often not reached.
